Nearly 10 million Americans are victims of revenge porn, study finds

Jennifer Lawrence

Just over two years ago, Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and many other actresses found their private images had been stolen and posted on the Internet for all to see.

While that stood as a high-profile case, men and women alike are victims of revenge porn much more often than you might think.

About one in 25 Americans are either threatened with or victims of nonconsensual image sharing, or "revenge porn" as it's more commonly known. That equates to roughly 10 million Americans, according to a study published by the Data & Society Research Institute.

These numbers were found as part of a larger study, which showed that 47% of Americans were victims of online harassment

"When we started the study, we wondered whether we would have anybody who said yes to that question," Amanda Lenhart, research lead for the study, told Business Insider in an interview. "We figured it would be a relatively low incident thing, but it turns out that it actually really happens."

The numbers also show that women under 30, minorities, and members of the LGBTQ community are much more likely to be threatened with revenge porn than men. That said, when it comes to having their pictures actually posted online, the numbers are much more equal across the board.

"There's been some suggestion that in fact men are victims and we just don't talk about them," Lenhart said. "That's one of the things that we think is important in this report, it's not just women that have these images posted it's men as well."

It's also important to understand that each case is different. Sometimes pictures are posted by a scorned lover while other times, like in the case of celebrities, the victims' accounts were hacked into and they do not even know their perpetrator. Whatever the reason, this statistic stands as a continued reminder to be careful what you post and share online. You never know who has access to it.

You can learn more about the study here.

16 actresses you'd never guess love to lift

Blake Lively Weight Training

Celebrity diets and workouts always seem like huge secrets, until their trainers reveal some of their tricks.

A trend that has been picking up speed inside and outside of Hollywood is weight training.

Everyone from "Wonder Woman" star Gal Gadot to Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton has started taking strength training seriously. Lifting heavy is no longer stigmatized as "just for the boys."

Here are 16 actresses and celebrities who have embraced the weight room — and love it.

Hilary Duff calls herself a "strong little gal."

Hilary Duff recently posted a viral photo of herself in a swimsuit. The actress loves her body for getting her where she needs to go and for giving her a son.

One of the other things she has her body do is weight lift. The actress told Cosmopolitan that she does a lot of strength training. "A lot of jumping, medicine balls, dead lifts, hip thrusts. I'm a pretty strong little gal," she said.

Although she is no longer with her personal trainer boyfriend, Jason Walsh, who trains other celebrities like Allison Brie and Emma Stone, Duff still makes exercise a priority

Megan Fox focuses on back exercises post-babies.

Within the span of two years Megan Fox had two babies. To strengthen her body post-babies, Fox enlisted the help of celeb trainer Harley Pasternak who focused on strengthening her back.

"[We're] really focusing on the muscles behind her body and to draw her posture back," Pasternack told Us Weekly in an interview about Fox's workouts.

"She was basically just pregnant for the better part of two years in between carrying babies," Pasternak went on. "So we got strength in her upper back with back rows, dumbbell rows, and the lower back with the Superman [stretch] for lower back."

Khloe Kardashian does heavy squats.

Khloe Kardashian isn't afraid to lift some heavy weights. Her personal trainer, Gunnar Peterson, often has her doing squats, lat pull downs, and kettlebell swings.

He told Hollywood Life that tiny weights won't cut it. "2 pound weights won't do anything. Your purse weighs more than that, your toddler weighs more than that, your carry-on weighs more than that," he said.

  • Kate Upton and Justin Verlander recently tied the knot in Italy.
  • The model wore a stunning Valentino wedding gown.
  • The gown featured a sheer lace upper bodice and sleeves, a tulle skirt, and a traditional flowing train.

It’s been a good month for model Kate Upton and Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander! Just days after celebrating a World Series win for Verlander’s baseball team, the couple is married, according to multiple outlets, including People, US Weekly, and Yahoo Sports.

Skipping the Astros parade to say their "I Dos," the couple were wed in a romantic Tuscan ceremony at the Rosewood Castiglion Del Bosco resort.

We got a glimpse of the bride’s heartstoppingly gorgeous Valentino gown thanks to TMZ, and it was every bit as breathtaking as we might have expected, with a sheer lace upper bodice and sleeves, a flowing tulle skirt, and a traditional flowing train.

According to US Weekly, she also received a stunning addition to her gargantuan Anita Ko engagement ring in the form of a wedding band, which was also designed by the jeweler.

The 25-year-old dished deets on the ceremony prior to her nuptials to Martha Stewart Weddings, telling the outlet that despite now-hubby Verlander’s "terrible allergies," her heart was set on "lots of flowers. And I know I want the petals already down by the time my niece, who will be my flower girl, walks down the aisle."

Congratulations to the happy couple!

  • Kate Upton and Justin Verlander have revealed photos of their gorgeous wedding.
  • The two tied the knot in Tuscany, Italy, in November.
  • They almost didn't make it to the wedding as the last game of the World Series kept Verlander in Los Angeles for longer than expected.
  • Their friends and family stayed with them at the Rosewood Castiglion Del Bosco resort for the celebration.
  • Before the wedding, the couple had an afternoon of family games planned before a red-themed rehearsal dinner.
  • The actual ceremony took place above the resort's beautiful "secret garden."
  • After a night of fireworks and karaoke, the two took off for their honeymoon in Puglia.

Though everybody is currently buzzing about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's future wedding, Kate Upton and Justin Verlander recently had a ceremony fit for royalty.

The two tied the knot on November 4 in Italy and newly released photos from Vogue show how stunning the celebration was.

Though the photos seem right out of a fairy-tale, things almost didn't go as planned for the couple. Verlander , a pitcher for the Houston Astros, had to be in Los Angeles only two days prior to play the last game in the World Series, and Upton was right there by his side while their friends and family were already at the venue in Italy.

"We had an event that night and everyone’s texting us, saying your wedding is so pretty. Wish you were here," Upton said during an appearance on "The Tonight Show."

Fortunately, the pair were still able to be there in spirit.

"We got taken around our wedding via FaceTime!" Verlander joked.

The couple thankfully made it just in time for an afternoon of family games and a red-themed rehearsal dinner at the Rosewood Castiglion Del Bosco resort in Tuscany, Italy, the day before the ceremony. Their family and friends stayed on the property with them in an effort to create a vacation feeling to the wedding.

Upton said she fell in love with the resort for its breathtaking views, especially from the beautiful "secret garden" where the actual wedding ceremony took place.

She wore a gown designed by Valentino with intricate lace detailing, while Verlander wore a suit by Cicchini Custom Clothier as they said "I do" against the backdrop of a gorgeous Tuscan landscape.

The ceremony was followed by a reception complete with toasts and a first dance to Michael Bublé's "Everything." Upton changed into a more glamorous gown for the reception, with a bold, sheer design by Christy Rilling Studio.

Upton then surprised Verlander with a fireworks display while the two cut the cake and kept the celebration going through the night with a bit of karaoke before heading off for their honeymoon in Puglia.

  • Kate Upton recently took to social media to accuse Paul Marciano, a co-founder of Guess, of sexual and emotional harassment.
  • In the midst of these allegations, Guess announced Jennifer Lopez as the face of the company's latest campaign.

Kate Upton is amongst an exclusive set of blonde models who had their careers made by a Guess campaign. But now, she's taken to social media to speak out against Paul Marciano, a co-founder of the company.

Upton doesn't specify an incident, but says Marciano "shouldn't be allowed to use his power in the industry to sexually and emotionally harass women." It's unclear if Upton was among the allegedly harassed women; others responded to Upton's Twitter post noting they, too, had heard of or witnessed misconduct from Marciano.

26 photos that show how models have changed over the years

models 3

Just as fashion has undergone drastic changes throughout the years, the models who help bring the designs to life have evolved as well.

In the past, models were often a major factor in establishing society's standards of beauty. Now, as beauty standards become more inclusive, they're shaping the types of models we see making their way down the runway.

Here are 26 photos that show how models have evolved throughout the years.

Illustrator Charles Dana Gibson painted beautiful women in his "Gibson Girls" paintings from the 1900s.

Illustrator Charles Dana Gibson created the image of the "Gibson Girl" by observing various women in his daily life. One of the most famous models for the paintings was Camille Clifford, whose hourglass figure came to shape the ideal look for many American women.

The 1920s saw the rise of the Flapper, an image built on a more rebellious and free-spirited nature.

Flapper-style dresses — which often featured pleated skirts or fringe and feather detailing — and a sense of attitude came to dominate much of the imagery in the fashion industry.

Before traditional supermodels become popular, Hollywood stars were huge fashion icons from the 1930s through to the 1950s. Marilyn Monroe was especially influential in the '50s.

Monroe became a movie star in the 1950s after a series of small modeling gigs led to her big break.

  • Kate Upton's Sports Illustrated photo shoot took a bit of a turn when the model was knocked over by a huge wave while posing topless on a rock.
  • An assistant rushed to help her move out of the way, but he was too late.
  • Upton explained that her skirt was heavy when it got wet, dragging her down as the wave hit.

Kate Upton, 25, had a scary brush with the ocean when intense waves forced her to fall into the water during a topless photo shoot with Sports Illustrated in Aruba and it certainly was a sight to see! In a video posted to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit’s Instagram on Feb. 13, Kate can be seen posing in nothing but nude bikini bottoms attached to a yellow gold tiered skirt while standing on a rock with the waves crashing behind her before an assistant quickly comes up to move her out of the way. Kate took his hands but the waves crept up before she could get off the rock and down into the ocean she went. Luckily some other people working on the shoot helped her back up but it sure was a close call! “Whoops! Things got a little rocky on @kateupton’s #SISwim 2018 shoot in Aruba! 👀 | @arubatourism@hiltonaruba #OneHappyIsland,” the lighthearted caption for the photo read. See the video of Kate's mishap below.

Kate took the time to explain what happened in the clip. “The next wave coming, it didn’t look that large from my point of view but it must have hit the rock just right and caught on,” she said. “This skirt whenever it’s wet with all the tools it is very heavy and it dragged me down.” Eek! It’s good to know that Kate was surrounded by people whose top priority was to keep her safe.

In addition to being in the news for being one of today’s top models, Kate made headlines for accusing Guess co-founder Paul Marciano, 66, of allegedly inappropriately touching her when she was working for the company at the age of only 18. She spoke out about how he allegedly made advances to her on more than one occasion and it added to the many stories more and more women are sharing today surrounding the #MeToo movement.

Guess co-founder will resign after investigation into sexual harassment and assault allegations found he 'exercised poor judgment'

paul marciano guess

  • Guess co-founder Paul Marciano is resigning as executive chairman following an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and assault.
  • The allegations first became public when model Kate Upton said in a Time magazine interview that Marciano grabbed her breasts during a Guess photo shoot nearly eight years ago.
  • "The investigation found that on certain occasions (Paul) Marciano exercised poor judgment in his communications with models and photographers and in placing himself in situations in which plausible allegations of improper conduct could, and did, arise," the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
  • Marciano will remain a board member and stay on as chief creative officer until his contract expires at the end of January.

Guess Inc. announced Tuesday that its co-founder Paul Marciano is stepping down after the completion of a company-commissioned investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and assault.

The Los Angeles-based fashion company revealed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that Marciano is resigning immediately as executive chairman of the Guess board, and his brother Maurice Marciano, another company co-founder, will take over.

"The investigation found that on certain occasions (Paul) Marciano exercised poor judgment in his communications with models and photographers and in placing himself in situations in which plausible allegations of improper conduct could, and did, arise," the filing said.

Paul Marciano, who has denied the allegations, will remain a board member and stay on as chief creative officer until his contract expires at the end of January. He had stepped aside from his day-to-day duties when the investigation began in February. He will forfeit his salary for the period he sat out, but will be paid from June until January. He also owns a 17 percent stake in Guess Inc.

The allegations first became public when model Kate Upton said in a Time magazine interview that Paul Marciano grabbed her breasts during a Guess photo shoot nearly eight years ago. She also says that he harassed her by showing up at hotels where she was staying and texting her inappropriate comments.

"It's disappointing that such an iconic women's brand @GUESS is still empowering Paul Marciano as their creative director #MeToo," Upton tweeted at the time.

Soon after a special committee of the Guess board and an outside law firm launched an investigation, which looked into several reports of inappropriate comments and texts along with unwanted kissing and groping.

"Many of the allegations could not be corroborated. In some cases, no conclusion could be reached because the individuals either declined to be interviewed or provided insufficient information to the investigators," Tuesday's filing said. "In other cases, the investigation found that credible accounts were given by both sides."

Four brothers, including original designer George Marciano, in 1981 founded the brand whose denim became a phenomenon in the 1980s and 1990s.

Paul Marciano handled the company's advertising, best known for its black-and-white photos of models including Anna Nicole Smith.

Resignations like his in the fashion industry have been far rarer than in movies and other media in the wave of sexual misconduct revelations spurred by stories on Harvey Weinstein in October.

The company also said it has settled lawsuits with five of Paul Marciano's accusers for a total of $500,000.

Attorney Lisa Bloom, who represents four of those women, said in a statement that they are pleased with his stepping down as board chair but disappointed he'll stay on in other capacities.

"We do not believe a man with so many credible accusations of sexual assault is fit to lead any company," Bloom said, "much less one that sells primarily to women."

Kate Upton, 26, and Justin Verlander, 35, have a precious bundle of joy on the way! The model took to Instagram on July 14 to casually announce that she's expecting by posting a gorgeous photo of herself with a hint of a bump! In the pic, Kate can be seen standing and smiling on a balcony while wearing a red pantsuit with a white tube top underneath and matching white shades. "#PregnantinMiami@justinverlander 🌞❤️," the mom-to-be captioned the radiant pic. Her message was short but sweet and definitely left a lasting impression! We're just thrilled for her and her Houston Astros pitcher hubby!

The amazing news comes eight months after Kate and Justin surprised everyone and got married in November 2017 just two days after Justin and the Astros won the World Series. They started dating in 2014 and got engaged in 2016 but they didn't share their wedding date with the public until it happened. This will be the first child for both Kate and Justin.

Although Kate didn't announce whether she's expecting a boy or a girl yet, we can bet it's going to be a beautiful baby and now that she's announced the news to the world, we're hoping she shows off her adorable growing bump in the months to come! Kate and Justin have always been a sweet and loving couple to each other in public so we're sure they'll be the same with the baby-to-be. We'll definitely be on the lookout for more pregnancy updates from Kate!

Model Kate Upton has blasted lingerie brand Victoria's Secret, criticizing VS for failing to be "body inclusive" and branding it a "snooze fest."

Upton, who was a guest on Andy Cohen's "Watch What Happens Live," didn't mince her words when she was asked about the possible cancellation of the iconic VS Fashion Show this year.

Upton clarified that she "did work" with Victoria's Secret previously, as in 2013 she starred in a catalogue for the brand, but told Cohen she felt VS had made no effort to be more inclusive. "You know what? We're sick of seeing the same body type. You have to be body inclusive now."

As the audience and fellow guest 50 Cent whooped and cheered, she continued: "Every woman needs to be represented, otherwise it's a snooze fest."

Although Upton did not go into more detail about her personal relationship with the brand, she was previously criticized by Victoria's Secret Fashion Show creative director Sophia Neophitou for being "like a Page 3 girl." Neophitou was interviewed by The New York Times for a profile on Upton in 2012 and said that Upton was "too obvious" and that they "would never use [Upton]" in one of their runway shows.

Neophitou said at the time, "She's like a footballer's wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy."

Upton went on to enjoy a successful modeling career, starring on the covers of magazines including Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, and Sports Illustrated. She was voted Hottest Woman of 2018 by Maxim.

She has also launched a fitness programme with her personal trainer Ben Bruno called Strong4Me to "help women of any fitness level build strength and confidence."

Victoria's Secret has come under fire in recent years for issues including its failure to include plus-size models in its runway shows, as well as for transphobic comments made by its chief marketing officer Ed Razek in 2018. Razek told Vogue, "Shouldn't you have transsexuals in the show? No ... Because the show is a fantasy."

He later apologized and said his words "came across as insensitive," adding that many transgender models had come to castings. A year later Brazilian trans model Valentina Sampaio was hired and made history as the first trans woman to feature in a VS brand campaign.

Former VS Angel Karlie Kloss also told Vogue in July that she had ended her relationship with the brand as she said, "I decided to stop working with Victoria's Secret as I didn't feel it was an image that was truly reflective of who I am and the kind of message I want to send to young women around the world about what it means to be beautiful."

Karlie Kloss

A few weeks ago, VS Angel Shanina Shaik told the Australian Daily Telegraph that Victoria's Secret had cancelled its 2019 show. She said, "Unfortunately the Victoria's Secret show won't be happening this year. It's something I'm not used to because every year around this time I'm training like an angel."

She continued, "But I'm sure in the future something will happen, which I'm pretty sure about. I'm sure they're trying to work on branding and new ways to do the show because it's the best show in the world."

Victoria's Secret has not released an official statement regarding this year's show.

Supermodel Kate Upton rails against 'dumb misogynist comments' after weighing in on World Series controversy

Kate Upton loves sports and she's not sorry about it.

The supermodel — who married Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander in 2017 — railed against the "dumb misogynist comments" she regularly endures after publicly commenting on happenings in the world of sports.

Upton most recently weighed in on the controversial interference call from Game 6 of the World Series, when Washington Nationals' Trea Turner was called out after a wild throw to first base hit Turner as he ran through the bag.

The play, which put the Nationals' entire season in jeopardy, had the baseball world up in arms because Turner seemingly only collided with Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel because the third baseman's throw took his glove into the runner's path.

Ever loyal to her husband and his American League champion squad, Upton argued that Turner "wasn't within the base path" and tweeted in favor of the call.

Many Twitter users commenting on Upton's post were quick to disagree with her, and some resorted to using sexist, derogatory language to challenge her stance.

The following day, the 2012, 2013, and 2017 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover model logged back onto Twitter to slam "all of the dumb misogynist comments" she receives after weighing in on sports.

"It reminds me that women need to keep fighting for equality," Upton added. "It's 2019 but feels like the 1950s. #feminist"

Though the controversial call stood in the Astros' favor after a considerable review, Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon crushed a two-run homer into the left-field bleachers to stretch Washington's lead to 5-2 and force the series to a winner-take-all Game 7.

The Nationals went on to win in Wednesday night's thriller, securing the franchise's first World Series title despite losing six-time MLB All-Star Bryce Harper during the 2018-19 offseason.
